Noida student death in a water-filled pit turns into a murder probe after his mother alleges foul play and names three friends.

The death of a 23-year-old student who drowned in awater-filled construction pit in Noida has taken a serious turn, with police now registering a murder case following allegations by his family. Harshit Bhatt, a physical education student who had just completed his sixth semester exam, died on Wednesday (April 8) after entering the pit behind the Supernova building in Sector 94 along with three friends. On Friday, an FIR for murder was filed at Sector 126 police station against the three companions identified as Vyas, Krish and Himanshu.

Police said they are investigating all angles, including the mother’sallegation of murder and whether the group was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

According to police, Harshit, a resident of Indirapuram and an undergraduate student at Amity University in Sector 125, had gone to the site with his friends after finishing his final exam. The group allegedly entered the stalled Noida Habitat and Convention Centre site through a broken boundary wall. The excavation pit, meant for basement construction, was filled with water.

CCTV footage shows the four buying liquor from a nearby shop around 2.45 pm. Police said they consumed alcohol before and after the exam, with beer cans and liquor bottles later recovered near the pit. Investigators believe the group, allegedly intoxicated, entered the water around 3.30 pm.

The friends told police that Harshit entered the pit first. After swimming near the edge and completing two laps, he moved towards the centre, where the pit was deeper with a marshy bottom. One friend reportedly tried to pull him out but got stuck in the sludge, prompting the group to call for help.

Police, along with fire department teams, SDRF and NDRF personnel, launched a rescue operation. Using ropes, they recovered Harshit from about 10 metres inside the pit. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Harshit’s mother, Deepmala, disputed the account and alleged foul play, claiming injury marks on his body and accusing the three friends of killing him.
