The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is constructing a 12-km bypass to connect the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor. It aims to improve road connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in Dehradun city.

The project involves a four-lane, access-controlled greenfield road designed to allow smoother and faster movement of vehicles. This bypass will act as an alternative route for traffic. It will reduce the number of vehicles passing through Dehradun, especially those not heading into the city.

New Route to Divert Traffic from Dehradun City

The proposed bypass will start from Jhajhra and connect with the Paonta Sahib–Ballupur section of National Highway-7. It will further join the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor near Asharori in Uttarakhand.

This alignment is expected to divert traffic heading towards areas such as Selaqui, Vikasnagar, Herbertpur, and Paonta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh. As a result, vehicles can avoid entering the crowded city areas, which will help reduce daily traffic jams.

    Project Cost and Completion Timeline

The total cost of the project is estimated at around Rs 716 crore. Officials have stated that nearly 44 per cent of the construction work has already been completed so far. The bypass is expected to be completed by April 2027. Once ready, it will provide a more efficient route for both passenger and commercial vehicles travelling across the region.

Impact on Traffic and Regional Connectivity

The new bypass is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and vehicular pollution in Dehradun. With fewer vehicles entering the city, travel time is likely to decrease, and road conditions may improve.

In addition, the project will enhance connectivity between northern states such as Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. It will also support smoother movement of goods and services, contributing to better regional transport infrastructure.
