Aims to Strengthen Connectivity, Industry & Regional Economic Growth

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has approved ₹1185 crore for road infrastructure works in the Surat Economic Region (SER). The region is identified as the growth hub of South Gujarat. The decision includes 24 road upgradation projects covering a total length of 383 kilometres across five districts in the region.

The move is part of the state’s roadmap to achieve Viksit Gujarat @2047. It also supports Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 during the Amrit Kaal.

Grit Established For Long-Term Development Planning

To accelerate the state’s holistic development, the Chief Minister established the Gujarat State Institution for Transformation (GRIT). The institution has outlined a long-term, result-oriented development framework based on four pillars: Infrastructure, Innovation, Individual and Institution.

Under this initiative, GRIT prepared Regional Economic Master Plans within a short time. These plans guide development across six growth hubs in Gujarat.

Surat Economic Region Identified As South Gujarat Growth Hub

As part of this strategy, the first set of projects worth ₹1185 crore has been approved. The funds will upgrade road infrastructure in the Surat Economic Region. The decision reflects the government’s commitment to the resolve of “Je Kahevu Te Karvu” (Delivering on Promises).

The Surat Economic Region includes the districts of Surat, Bharuch, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi and Dang. Together, these districts contribute more than 35 per cent to Gujarat’s total economic development.

Roadmap Aligned With Viksit Gujarat @2047

Gujarat already plays a major role in India’s economic development. Therefore, the state has implemented a Viksit Gujarat @2047 roadmap under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

The strategy aims to strengthen the state’s economy through sustained economic growth under the vision of “Earning Well – Living Well”. Within this framework, the Surat Economic Region is emerging as a key centre for long-term economic development.

24 Projects To Upgrade 383 Km Of Roads

Under the multi-district economic development plan during the Amrit Kaal, ₹1185 crore has been sanctioned. The funds will upgrade 24 road infrastructure projects in the Surat Economic Region. These projects will upgrade a total road length of 383 kilometres across five districts of the region.

    Improved Connectivity For Industrial Clusters

Upgraded road infrastructure will improve connectivity between major industrial hubs. It will also strengthen links with GIDC areas in Surat, Tapi, Valsad, Bharuch and Navsari districts. Better road connectivity is expected to improve logistics operations and facilitate smoother movement of goods and labour.

    Support For Major Industrial Sectors

The road infrastructure improvements are expected to support key industries in the region, including textiles, chemicals, petrochemicals and diamonds. Several other sectors will also benefit from the upgrades, including fisheries and operations linked to Hazira Port. These include sugar factories, Sumul Dairy, papad industries, and mining and lignite projects. Improved connectivity will strengthen access to GIDC areas such as Kadod, Kadodara, Jolva, Mangrol, Kosamba and Tadkeshwar.

Benefits For Agriculture And Rural Economy

Enhanced road connectivity in the Surat Economic Region will enable faster transport of agricultural produce to markets. This will help farmers move their crops more easily and support the growth of the agricultural sector across the region.

    Tourism Connectivity Expected To Improve

Improved road infrastructure will make travel easier to religious sites in South Gujarat. These include Siddhnath Mahadev Temple, Shabari Dham, Pandav Gufa, AnjKund and Sanjan ni Agiyari. Access to eco-tourism destinations including Mahal forest, Saputara and Wilson Hills will improve. The move is expected to boost tourism activity in the region.

    Emerging Sectors And Employment Opportunities

The Surat Economic Region already hosts major traditional industries including the diamond sector, petrochemical and chemical industries, textiles and fisheries.

With improved infrastructure, the region may also see opportunities emerging in sectors such as semiconductors, green hydrogen and logistics. These developments are expected to generate large-scale employment opportunities for youth.

Ser Positioned As Key Economic Engine

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has envisioned the Surat Economic Region as a strategic growth engine for Viksit Gujarat @2047. Under the state’s target of building a $3.5 trillion economy by 2047, the region has a major role. It is expected to contribute over 35% to Gujarat’s GSDP.

Road infrastructure upgrades in the Surat Economic Region have received approval. As a result, infrastructure-led economic development is expected to gain momentum.
