Two-lane Corridor to Boost Outer Delhi Connectivity
The Delhi government has sanctioned ₹453.95 crore for constructing service roads along both sides of the Najafgarh drain. The project aims to enhance connectivity in outer Delhi. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the decision on Tuesday. The proposal was cleared earlier at an Expenditure and Finance Committee (E&FC) meeting she chaired.
The project has received financial clearance at an estimated cost of ₹453.95 crore. The approval was granted during the E&FC meeting headed by the chief minister.
61 km Two-Lane Road with Dedicated Tracks
Under the plan, a paved road of nearly 61 km will be developed along the Najafgarh drain. The carriageway will be seven metres wide and designed as a two-lane road. Separate tracks for walking, jogging and cycling will also be constructed alongside the corridor.
“The primary objectives of the project are to reduce congestion on major roads, cut travel time and fuel consumption and lower vehicular emissions. The corridor will provide a new direction to Delhi’s transport infrastructure by developing an alternative intra-city route within the capital,” CM Gupta said.
Earlier Clearance by I&FC Department
The drain and adjacent land fall under the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department. Therefore, the proposal was approved at the department’s board meeting in December last year. The meeting was chaired by Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh.
Integration with Major Arterial Roads
The proposed corridor will connect with key roads such as Outer Ring Road and Inner Ring Road. It will also link Shivaji Marg, Pankha Road, UER-II, connecting to NH-9 (Rohtak Road), and Najafgarh Road.
“At Basaidarapur, it will link with the Inner Ring Road, at Keshopur with the Outer Ring Road, at Vikaspuri link with Pankha Road, at Kakrola with Najafgarh Road and at Dhulsiras with UER-II, enabling direct access to the airport and the Dwarka Expressway,” the CM further said.
Timeline for Approvals and Completion
The Delhi government aims to secure administrative approvals by March 2026. The tendering process is expected to conclude by April 2026, with construction scheduled to begin in May 2026. The project is targeted for completion by November 2027, she added.
