Pilot Plan to Guide Citywide Road Revamp
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority has approved redeveloping the Subhash Chowk–Bakhtawar Chowk road as a model green corridor. Officials said the stretch will serve as a pilot project. The learnings from this initiative will guide similar road upgrades across other parts of the city.
GMDA chief executive officer PC Meena has directed that the corridor be developed as a demonstration project. The work will strictly follow the authority’s approved model road guidelines. The initiative is expected to serve as a reference for future urban road improvements in Gurugram.
Focus on Safety, Walkability, and Drainage
The road revamp is aimed at improving traffic safety, pedestrian convenience, drainage performance, and the overall streetscape along the busy route. Officials said special emphasis will be placed on making the corridor safer and more user-friendly.
As part of the upgrade, new road safety installations will be introduced along the stretch. Pedestrian footpaths will be constructed or repaired, while drainage systems will be strengthened to prevent monsoon waterlogging. The plan also includes developing green zones along both sides of the road to enhance visual appeal.
Infra-1 Branch to Prepare Cost Estimates
GMDA’s additional chief executive officer, Vishwajit Chaudhary, has instructed the Infra-1 division to prepare a detailed cost estimate. The estimate will cover repairs to footpaths and the central verge along the Subhash Chowk–Bakhtawar Chowk stretch.
Lane Markings and Safer Crossings Proposed
The makeover will include new lane markings, zebra crossings, information signage, and improved junction designs. These measures aim to ensure smoother traffic movement and safer pedestrian crossings. Meanwhile, the Infra-2 branch has been tasked with cleaning stormwater drains and installing covers. Rainwater drainage systems along the corridor will also be strengthened to improve monsoon preparedness.
Green Belts and Public Seating Planned
GMDA’s environment wing will develop green belts along the road, planting ornamental trees and shrubs in a park-style layout. Benches will also be installed to create a more people-oriented public space. The mobility branch will work on traffic management improvements, including repairs to traffic signals and upgrades to associated systems.
More Roads to Follow
“The main road from Subhash Chowk to Bakhtawar Chowk will be upgraded into a model road. After transforming this stretch, more roads in Millennium City will be developed on similar lines,” said Mr. Vishwajit Chaudhary.
