MCD Plans Massive Road Reconstruction in 2026–27
Delhi’s internal roads under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are finally set for an upgrade. With the Delhi government approving funds for reconstruction and strengthening, the civic body has drawn up its plan. It aims to improve nearly 1,300 km of stretches across all 12 zones in 2026–27.
Funding and Tendering Details
In its February submission to the Delhi government, MCD reported that ₹974 crore has been allocated under MPLAD and MLALAD. The funding will support road reconstruction and strengthening projects across various areas of the city. This amount will cover 716 km of internal roads, with tendering already in progress.
To complete the remaining 584 km, the corporation required an additional ₹905 crore. With the government’s approval now secured, officials have instructed the initiation of the tendering process for the remaining stretches.
Focus on Outer Delhi
The majority of upcoming work will target outer Delhi. Najafgarh zone accounts for 349 km of identified roads, while Narela zone will see improvements on 170 km.
An official said, “We are covering areas based on repeated requests from residents and surveys conducted by our staff. While roads in prominent areas often receive attention through various schemes, the outskirts remain neglected, which is why we are prioritising them.”

Long-Term Redevelopment and Timeline
A December report by MCD highlighted that 1,503 km of Delhi’s 6,127.8 km internal road network needed redevelopment. These stretches, up to 18 metres wide, were identified as requiring urgent reconstruction and strengthening. The project was estimated at around ₹2,000 crore. Of this, 1,000 km is proposed for completion in 2026, and the remaining 503 km in 2027.
On February 17, the Delhi government announced ₹1,330 crore in support for 2026–27. This funding will be used to repair, construct, and pave approximately 1,000 km of roads. Authorities directed that major works be completed by September 30 to reduce dust pollution before winter. “Work has already picked up pace on projects for which funds have been released,” an official confirmed.
