Dehradun: The much-awaited Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is in its final stage of construction. Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have confirmed that the remaining work, including signage, speed-measuring cameras, and mobile towers, will be completed within 15 days.
The most crucial part of the project is the 12-km elevated road, Asia’s largest green corridor, directly connecting to Dehradun. This section is nearly complete, and only the arched flyover at Datkali, added later to protect pilgrims, remains under construction.
Reduced distance and travel time
Currently, the distance between Delhi and Dehradun is 236 km. Once the expressway is fully operational, the distance will reduce to 213 km, saving 23 km. This will cut travel time drastically—from nearly 6.5 hours to just 2.5 hours. Continue reading
This reduction will benefit not only daily commuters but also tourists, pilgrims, and businesses, making Dehradun more accessible from the national capital.
Advanced safety features
The expressway will feature modern technology to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow:
Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS): Cameras will monitor speeding, and challans will be issued online.
Video Incident Detection Systems (VIDS): These will automatically alert the control room in case of accidents, enabling quick rescue operations.
A boost for tourism and economy
The expressway is expected to transform travel between Delhi and Uttarakhand. Faster connectivity will boost tourism in Dehradun, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, and Haridwar, while also supporting local businesses and pilgrimage routes.
The elevated green corridor is designed to minimize environmental impact, making it a model for sustainable infrastructure.
