Bihar Expressway Network: Nitish government to create UPEDA-like authority, network of 5 new expressways to be laid in the state
Bihar Expressway News 2026: Vehicles will now run at speeds of up to 100 km per hour on Bihar’s roads. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s government has developed a master plan to elevate the state’s connectivity to a global level. Following the Uttar Pradesh-based UPEIDA, a new expressway authority will be formed in Bihar to oversee the construction of high-speed corridors in the state.
Nitish government’s ‘Mission 5 Hour’
The Bihar government aims to make the distance from any remote corner of the state to the capital, Patna, a maximum of five hours. To this end, five new expressways are planned under “Saat Nischay-2.”
The model will be similar to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
The Bihar government plans to implement the Mumbai-Pune Expressway model in its state, considered one of the country’s most successful infrastructure projects. This expressway is approximately 94.5 kilometers long and features six lanes, making travel extremely fast and comfortable. Vehicles are permitted to travel at a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour, allowing more than 65,000 vehicles to easily travel on this road daily.
The one-way toll for cars on this expressway is ₹320. The road starts from Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai and ends at Kiwale in Pune. The Bihar government is also planning to build a high-speed, access-controlled expressway along similar lines to develop a fast, safe, and modern road network in the state.
Work is currently underway on these 4 expressways in Bihar.
In coordination with the central and state governments, work has already begun on four major expressway projects in Bihar:
- Patna-Purnia Expressway (NE-09): It will connect the capital with Seemanchal.
- Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway: Will become a lifeline for the northern districts of Bihar.
- Raxaul-Haldia Expressway: Direct connectivity from Nepal border to the port in West Bengal.
- Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata Expressway: Corridor connecting Bengal and UP via South Bihar (Kaimur-Aurangabad).
High-level committee will visit other states
According to Road Construction Minister Dilip Jaiswal, a special committee has been formed to expedite expressway construction. This committee will visit states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Successful financial models and land acquisition processes from these states will be studied and implemented in Bihar.
What will change with Bihar Expressway Authority?
- Faster land acquisition: The formation of the new authority will reduce delays in acquiring land.
- Investment opportunities: Better roads will lead to the development of industrial hubs along the expressway.
- Employment: Construction works and new business centres will provide employment to local youth.
Bihar is now moving towards becoming an “Expressway State,” shedding its backward road status. If these projects are completed on time, Bihar’s economic landscape will be completely transformed.
